Chapter 10

“Let’s think about this situation,” Tracey warned as we hastily tried to throw together a plan. “Dr. Merrick’s AI wasn’t destroyed, it’s currently trapped inside your head. We can use that as leverage.”

“Great,” I joked as I held my pistol at the ready and waited. “So, instead of just killing me, they’ll capture me and rip the microchip out of my skull instead.”

“She has a point,” Natalie admitted. “If they don’t want to risk damaging their precious AI, they won’t be as reckless with their onslaught. We should expect any moves they make to be simple and precise.”

“They already have another copy, though,” I reminded the team. “Why wouldn’t they just light us up?”

“Correction,” Tracey noted, “the military has a copy. Deltacorp is going to do whatever it takes to preserve the original code of Dr. Merrick’s AI. Which probably means you’re right… Their objective will be to extract the chip by any means necessary.”

“That’s only a fancy way of saying ‘they’ll bash your skull open,’” I huffed. “How many do you think there are, Natalie?”

The Scavenger scowled as she tried to focus in on the sound of the approaching guards’ feet. Suddenly, her face dropped.

“A lot,” she groaned. “Like, a lot, a lot. But we do have one advantage… ”

“What could that possibly be?” Tracey demanded and crossed her arms over her chest. “There’s only three of us, and all we have are two pistols.”

“We have the advantage of space,” the blonde woman explained as she jogged over to one of the servers and looked it over. “These things are thick enough to stop any smaller-caliber bullets, and they only have one point of entrance in that door over there. If we play this right, we might be able to fight them off. These security guards don’t seem like very elite warriors in the first place.”

“They’re not,” Tracey reassured Natalie. “The worst they usually have to deal with is rowdy teenagers and drunks. Now, the Deltacorp Strike Team, on the other hand? We don’t want them breathing down our necks.”

“Uh, the what, now?” I demanded.

“The Deltacorp Strike Force,” the woman continued, “they’re a product of Deltacorp’s first contract with the military. Think of them as a sort of privatized corporate SWAT team. But I wouldn’t worry quite yet… They deploy from outside the city, so I doubt they’re here just yet.

Well, that totally put my mind at ease.

“They’re almost here,” Natalie warned, “we need to get into position.”

I grabbed Tracey by the wrist and led her to safety behind one of the nearest servers. Natalie ducked behind the first one across the aisle, and then we both peeked out with our pistols at the ready.

“We’re sitting ducks in here!” Tracey cried out.

“We don’t have any other choice,” I reminded her somberly. “Let’s just hope these guys are guards and not the strike force.”

“May I make a suggestion?” Natalie spoke up as she stared at the door in anticipation. “The ‘Faux Throw’ maneuver Karla taught us may come in handy in this situation.
